Squamscott Community Commons plans to construct a community center that will be home to a full-service family YMCA and nonprofit agencies that provide programs and services in health, wellness, arts, culture, nutrition, childcare and recreation to the region. The Commons will be the keeper of the mission and will be continually responsive to the changes in the needs and demographics of the community. Together, the YMCA and participating nonprofits will manage and maintain the community center building, develop and sustain the adjacent Little River Nature Preserve, and coordinate collaborative program to serve the entire Seacoast community.

The integrated and sustainable design of this centrally located facility will increase public awareness of and involvement in these local charitable organizations. Opportunities for new partnerships and collaborative ventures between the agencies, local businesses and health services will broaden outreach throughout Rockingham County, strengthening local communities and enhancing their overall quality of living. The community center's operation will be funded through fee for service programs and lease revenue from participating nonprofits. With sound planning and design, our multi-tenant center will build capacity and reduce operating costs for its agencies. Our agencies, in turn, can focus on what they do best: providing good programs and services for our community.

What Makes this Project Innovative?

This facility will promote interaction and cooperation between towns in the region and be a central gathering place for individuals, families, the community and organizations.

The center itself will be a regional model for environmental and sustainable building design and operations.

Squamscott Community Commons will serve as a Community Support Organization (CSO) for its tenants and the wider community. As a CSO, Squamscott Community Commons will convene, facilitate and sustain community collaborations and foster local partnerships to improve the way the community solves problems.

The new community center will be an important partner in a wider campus, The Tuck Learning Campus: Alternative Education Program, Exeter Adult Education, Great Bay eLearning Charter School, and Seacoast School of Technology.

Squamscott Community Commons will promote the development of a vital base of volunteers for the community.

Squamscott Community Commons will be a community leader and have the capacity to be responsive to changing needs and demographics.
